Building a sustainable model for quality journalism
Established in 2014, our network emerged from the conviction that Australian communities deserved media that served public interest rather than purely commercial imperatives.
Origins and evolution
We began with a single regional publication in northern New South Wales. The founding team recognized that local journalism was disappearing as commercial pressures forced closures across rural and suburban Australia. Rather than accept this trend as inevitable, they built a new model.
The approach centered on editorial investment rather than cost minimization. Instead of shrinking newsrooms and relying on wire services, we expanded reporting capacity while implementing sustainable revenue strategies that didn't depend solely on declining advertising markets.
By 2017, the network had grown to six publications across three states. Each maintained local editorial control while sharing resources in areas like investigative journalism, multimedia production, and technology infrastructure. This structure proved resilient during subsequent industry disruption.
Today we operate eighteen properties spanning news, lifestyle, business, and culture verticals. Our team includes award-winning journalists, producers, photographers, and strategists who collectively bring over six hundred years of combined industry experience.
Principles that guide our work
Editorial independence
Commercial relationships never influence coverage decisions. Our business development and editorial teams operate with clear separation, ensuring that journalism serves readers rather than advertisers.
Transparency
When we make mistakes, we correct them prominently. When we face conflicts of interest, we disclose them. Our corrections policy is public and our process for reader complaints is clearly documented.
Community accountability
We regularly engage with the communities we cover through town halls, reader surveys, and direct feedback channels. Our editorial priorities reflect what matters to our audiences, not just what generates traffic.
Investment in depth
Quality journalism requires time and resources. We protect space for deep reporting even when quick content would be easier to produce, believing that thorough investigation ultimately serves audiences better.
Distributed teams, shared mission
Our staff work from offices in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, and Canberra. While each location maintains editorial autonomy, we collaborate on investigations that cross state boundaries and share expertise across the network.
How we fund journalism
Revenue comes from multiple streams including reader subscriptions, content licensing, branded content partnerships, and advertising. This diversification reduces dependence on any single source and creates stability that allows long-term editorial planning.
Reader revenue has grown from less than ten percent of income in 2018 to over forty percent today. This shift reflects growing audience willingness to pay for quality when the value proposition is clear.
Technology as enabler
We've invested heavily in content management systems, audience analytics tools, and distribution infrastructure that allows efficient operation at scale. These systems free editorial staff from technical burdens so they can focus on reporting and storytelling.
Our data practice helps identify emerging topics, understand which formats resonate with different audience segments, and optimize content for discovery without compromising editorial judgment.
Industry recognition
Our journalists have received awards from the Walkley Foundation, the Kennedy Awards for Excellence in Journalism, and multiple state press club honors. These recognitions reflect commitment to investigative rigor, narrative craft, and public service journalism.
Beyond individual accolades, our business model has been studied by journalism organizations internationally as they seek sustainable alternatives to legacy revenue structures.
